Barcode Scanner Not Scanning
Last updated: June 18, 2026
If your barcode scanner is powering on but failing to read barcodes, the problem is almost always one of five things — and most of them are repairable for less than the cost of a replacement. This guide walks through the most common causes by brand and model, and tells you when repair makes sense versus replacement.
Most Common Reasons a Barcode Scanner Won't Scan
Failed scan engine
The laser or imager that reads barcodes has worn out or been damaged. Most common cause of sudden scanning failure on Zebra MC9090, MC9300, and Honeywell CK75.
Cracked scan window
The protective glass or plastic window over the scan engine is cracked or scratched, distorting the beam. Common on warehouse floor devices.
Dirty scan window
Dust, grease, or adhesive residue on the scan window blocks the beam. Clean with a dry microfiber cloth before sending for repair.
Corrupted scan engine firmware
The scanner powers on but the scan engine fails to initialize. Requires firmware reflash.
Failed scan engine cable
The ribbon cable connecting the scan engine to the motherboard has broken or disconnected. Common after drops.
Wrong symbology settings
The scanner is not configured to read the barcode type being scanned (e.g., set to 1D only but scanning QR codes).

When to Repair vs Replace
A scan engine replacement typically costs $209–$209 and restores the scanner to full function with a 90-day warranty. A replacement scanner of the same model costs $300–$800+ refurbished. If the rest of the device is in good condition, repair almost always wins.
