    Barcode Scanner Not Turning On

    Last updated: June 18, 2026

A barcode scanner that won't power on is one of the most alarming failures in a warehouse — but it's often one of the most repairable. Most "dead" scanners have a failed battery, damaged charging port, or corrupted firmware — not a dead motherboard. Here's how to tell the difference.

    Diagnosis

Common Causes — Scanner Won't Power On

    01

    Dead or failed battery

The most common cause. Batteries degrade over 12–18 months of heavy use. Replacement starts at $143.

    02

    Charging port damage

Port is bent, corroded, or broken from drops or repeated plugging. Very common on MC9090, CK75, and TC52.

    03

    Corrupted firmware

Device fails to boot due to firmware corruption. Recoverable with a reflash in most cases.

    04

    Failed power button

Trigger or power button mechanism broken from drops or wear.

    05

    Motherboard failure

Less common but possible after liquid damage or severe impact. We diagnose before quoting.

    06

    Charging cradle issue

The cradle, not the scanner, may be faulty. Test the scanner in a different cradle first.
